william’s christmas elves
I have been given the job of introducing the new first year BA Furniture students to the workshops and the idea of making things. A general knowledge about production processes and materials and hands on experience of making things is a vital part of becoming a designer. Without a good understanding of what materials can do, how much things cost and the different manufacturing processes that are available to you, designers tend to make expensive mistakes.
Seeing as the first years have a great introduction to the design process by Jane Atfield, I thought it best if we avoided the act of designing in order to more quickly start to make. To help with this I’ve asked a number of more experienced designers if they have any designs for easily producable christmas gifts in their portfolios. Let’s wait and see what I get back.
