This will be a free downloadable gift developed for a research project with Brighton University. Link to ‘Bitrwapped’, an online giftshop.

The brief was to design gifts that could be sold and delivered online without the need for manufactured goods. The project is an attempt to help people select and give more relevant personal gifts and to eliminate some of the environmental impact of producing, transporting and disposing of short life gifts that often only exist in order to satisfy the act of giving.

My design is a single A4 colour printout which can be read to a child and folded up simultaneously, culminating in a suprise end to the activity.

I wrote the poem for my daughter a few years ago but never managed to produce it as the book I had planned. The story line is about a girl who spends all winter looking for the missing rabbits, only to discover them again in spring. There are many dark insinuations that suggest the rabbits may have met a number of sticky endings. This is an attempt to engage all ages in the story.

The origami I have used is an existing pattern. It’s much easier to follow somebody else doing it than to read the instructions. For help with the folding, take a look at this very calm Japanese man on You Tube.

Where have all the rabbits gone?

For Miss M.T. Warren.

Where have all the rabbits gone? I can not see them anywhere. They used to hop upon the lawn, and jump about just over there, so where have all the rabbits gone?

I went to look upon the road, to see if they had been squashed flat, but all I found was a travelling man with a lucky charm and a grey fur hat, so where have all the rabbits gone?

I tried to ask the farmer why, there were no rabbits on the run. He would not speak, he was eating pie, and I did not like his hunting gun, so where have all the rabbits gone?

I went to the vet for a diagnosis, to check for a rash of miximatosis. But the surgery was now a butchers, and a pet shop full of empty hutches. So where have all the rabbits gone?

I went to ask the scientists, but they’re too busy running tests. Too busy testing chemicals to help me track down animals. So where have all the rabbits gone?

I approached the dog, spoke to the cat, I asked the fox and I questioned rats, but none of them could talk to me, they are all animals you see and human vocal cords they lack. So where have all the rabbits gone?

I went to look for rabbit poo. I kept my eyes pinned to the ground in search of somthing dark and round and showed my dad what I had found. He said “Rabbit poo that is not, I think it might be shotgun shot.” So where have all the rabbits gone?

In the spring I took a walk, to stretch my legs and take the air, and as I rambled through the fields I spotted rabbits everywhere. Bunnies large and bunnies small, there was a carpet wall to wall. At last their secret I had found. They had been busy underground.

Design consultant for the Sorrell Foundationon, helping to develop four new youth centres… The centres are to be built over the next two years (2010 -2011)

The DCSF ‘myplace’ project is delivering £270m in capital investment to create a network of 70 exemplar youth centres across the UK. Recognising that youth input was required for the success of the project, the Sorrell Foundation was invited to apply their ‘joinedupdesign’ programme to the development of 25 of these centres. This programme empowers local young people through the creation of ‘youth client teams’ with decision making powers for the project. The benefit is twofold; better project outcomes by involving end-users in the design process, and a group of young people awakened to possibility of a career in design.

To ensure these youth teams maintain an effective voice in directing the project outcomes, they are partnered with design professionals who act as mentors. The mentors lead the team through a professional design process of site visits, facilitated meetings and design workshops. For the ‘myplace’ project this culminated in the development of a concise design brief for each youth centre and gave the young people involved the confidence to assert the primacy of their role as clients in consultation with architects, graphic designers, and funding stakeholders.

William was assisted in this role by Steven Clutton, a former student of William’s and a general good egg.

The Back of the Palace was built in 1689 by Christopher Wren for the monarchs William and Mary. It is considered to be the english Versailles and an amazing example of high Boroque. Unlike the tudor palace, the baroque palace remains largely original and still full of its original furniture and fittings.

The set brief was to develop an educational resource for secondary school pupils, to enable the palace to welcome classes from across the country for a short project that could be used as part of their marked Design and Technology curriculum.

William spent a number of days drawing in the palace and developed designs for giftware lighting relating to the numerous chandeliers within the palace.

The residency concluded with a written brief for the students and a handling collection of material experiments as well as a finished product to use as a teaching aid and an online video resource to support the delivery of the brief. It is now available to secondary schools.

Creative Partnerships engaged William to work alongside a group of forty five Robert Clack pupils, to ensure that the students who will be using the new school have a say in its design and to benifit the students with the learning opportunities this process presented.

William and the students centred their thinking on the school’s entranceways and through a process of discussion and analysis delivered a critical look at the existing site. The students observations and recommendations were presented to the school’s teaching staff and made into a book which is intended to be given to the appointed architects as part of their briefing, so that the students work can directly inform the design of the new building.

“Our aim is to help improve the school and make it more welcoming for the community. When visiting Robert Clack, we think visitors are disappointed. Although they are aware of our good results, the school doesn’t give off a good impression.” Robert Clack student

The Lino has a graphic in the centre that aims to provide ‘Incidental learning’ by showing technical details in everyday objects such as radius, inside diameter, cubic measurements and isometric views. The workbench has rulers set into its edges and legs so students can quickly calculate approximate measurements.

There are coat hooks under the table surface, a brush, a central board for bags and locations for Gratnells plastic trays, all designed to keep the working area clean. The benches are designed to be used seated on stools or standing and they have an adjustable height leg. The tables also have square flat sides so they can be pushed together or kept as individual units. There is a hole in the centre of the table for cable management, that keeps the tables options open for changing technologies.

The Ergo stool has four leg rests at different heights on each side so that it can be rotated to fit different heights of school children. The stools can be fitted into the workbench to help keep the workshop tidy and safe.

Designed with Carl Clerkin, the FFF workbench and Ergo stool was developed in collaboration with manufacturer Emir. The project was awarded as a commission from the Design Council following a competitive bidding phase.
